Clothing and Textile Advisors

The WSU Extension Clothing & Textile Advisor (CTA) Program is comprised of volunteers who are trained in clothing, textiles, quilting techniques, handwork, and communication skills and leadership. They in turn extend knowledge and skills to others. The CTA Program is a Master Volunteer Program, comparable to the Master Gardener, Master Composter Recyler, Extension Livestock Advisors, and Master Food Preservers programs.

Each volunteer receives 30+ hours of training from Washington State University Extension faculty members and other knowledgeable staff, professionals and volunteers. The instruction includes the latest methods of clothing construction, valuable information on textiles and knowledge on the latest products and trends for those who sew at home.

CTAs receive subject matter training, and they are given the opportunity to learn a variety of skills, including leadership and communication skills, and teaching methods. Volunteers have the opportunity to implement their skills in a 'safe' setting with peers, and become employed or start their own business as a result of their training.

Volunteers return 60 hours of volunteer service through a variety of methods such as workshops, class series and demonstrations at local community events.

CTAs also help to manage and staff the largest Sewing and Stitchery Expo in the United States. Each year more than 175 volunteers help with seminars style shows, reaching more than 33,000 persons.

The next WSU Lewis County CTA Volunteer Training will be offered in Lewis County in the Fall 2007. You may qualify to be a CTA if you have desire to share your knowledge with others, further personal education goals, have a knowledge of basic sewing skills, and are available for all training sessions.
